City Catering's Junior Chef of the Year Competition

Since 2016 City Catering have run the Junior Chef of the Year competition in Stoke-on-Trent. The aim of the competition is to inspired young people to have an interest and a passion for food, meeting the Ofsted and the School Food Plan objectives of food education.

Each year Key Stage 2 pupils are invited to enter and asked to produce a savoury dish for four people that can be prepared, cooked and served in 60 minutes. Recipes are judged on taste, texture, appearance, creativity and the use of local ingredients.

Pupils are asked to think about using produce that is in season and the nutritional balance of the dish, while working to a budget. Cook Off sessions are run over three days with the winners from each session going forward to the final day where the overall winner will be announced.

The winner of the competition will receive a personalised chef's uniform, a selection of cooking equipment and a trophy. They will also win a COOKIT set worth £800 for their school. The winning dish will also be featured on future primary menus as a 'special dish'. All budding chefs taking part in the competition also receive a commemorative souvenir.
